Labassa House: 353 Flinders Lane, Melbourne

A seven storey brick Edwardian former warehouse with a basement. Built for Edward Miller and his wife Mary around 1915. Mr Miller a financier and pastoralist was a MLC who represented South Yarra. An early investor in BHP he was a noted philanthropist and was the first honorary treasurer of the Australian Red Cross Society. He maintained an office in the building. The Miller family held the property until 1970. The first tenants included; Shanks & Co Pty Ltd, plumbers and sanitary appliance distributors; Kemsley & Co Pty Ltd, manufactuers’ agents; Julias Blau & Sons, perfumers; McEuen & Co, manufacturers’ agents and Rae, Munn & Gilbert advertising specialists. Refurbished, subdivided and converted into residential units with ground level retail with an added mezzanine on the top floor in 1995.
